In this episode of the fix list we’ll see how nearly any image can be improved by looking at reference photos. They’re your friend! I've found that 3D renders of primitives or 3D poses are also great sources of reference. It can sometimes be easier than hunting for the perfect photo reference. On a side note. My late uncle was a wildlife painter. Never used a reference in his life. Of course it helped that he had an eidetic memory. He could paint a detailed animal he'd seen while camping 10 years back.

I would also add, just practice and mileage are great, they will get you there, but "just practice" is not the most efficient. Learning gesture and learning how light interacts with color are two completely different goals, and to get better at them specifically, you'll have to come up with specific exercises that train this exact thing. Sure, you will be getting better at both when painting a series of finished paintings, but much slower, as you will be dealing with everything at once. What I did is find a roadmap, read a lot of theory, come up with specific practice exercises for all the fundamentals, and do a lot of small studies. For example, to learn perspective I read "How to draw" and "Framed Perspective", watched a lot of videos and found an exercise: take a photo of a simple real life object and try to draw the basic forms on top. Your goal is to understand how the theory you learned applies here: figure out the horizon line, how the object is rotated relative to the camera, where does the foreshortening occur and how does it relate to vanishing points. When you get better at it, try to draw them aside of the photo while looking at it. Then try to just take a look at the object and replicate the form without constantly looking at the reference. I did not try to render or color these, and I started with things like a tissue box and my cup, and now I can draw human mannequins in the poses I want, briefly looking up some reference. It only took a couple of months of studies. Right now I am learning how to create blending, texture and nuance in reflected light and halftone. Your videos are an immense help with the techniques of doing this with Photoshop, despite being almost a decade old. Thank you so much.

This was probably the first video I've seen that was *actually* thorough about the details. I'm an art school graduate, and I've constantly sought videos since my education. Most of the videos are so vague in their instruction. They say what they're doing, but not *how* they're doing it. You are thorough! The art community appreciates it.

It feels so nostalgic watching your videos. I started learning from your videos yearsss ago XD, from absolute zero knowledge, even I didn't know how to blend shades XD, then long road until I landed my dream job in 2019. Unfortunately I had to stop watching because my govt banned Vimeo for dumb reasons as always, so glad you posted them on youtube

2:35. Under the hood is simple and unambiguous answer: flow is a opacity for EACH brush's circle(or another shape) of which it consists. If you go to Brush settings/Brush tip shape and increase spacing a bit you will see it.
